Challenges |
I love to set goals for myself, especially scrapping goals. Each month in our Shaker Challenge forum, I will challenge you to set a page goal for the month and then we will encourage one another to reach that page goal. Everyone who reaches or exceed their goal for the month will have their name put into a drawing for a scrap-related prize.
The October winner is Barb/corgizenger, who set her page goal at 10 and exceeded it early in October. We had 10 who reached their page goals this month. Way to go, Ladies and Congratulations to Barb for being our winning Page goal player!
For details on how everyone did, please visit the thread in our Challenge forum.

Our November theme is: Thankful/Blessings
This is the season for counting our blessings and sharing special moments with our loved ones. No matter what the occasion, document that special event and share it with us here!
Our November Technique is: Ribbons
Ribbons are so popular right now and can be used in a variety of ways. Get those ribbons out and use them on your next page! We would love to see your designs!
There is also a thread in our Technique forum with a lot of great ribbon ideas.
If you design a layout that includes both the theme AND the technique, you might even win our November layout contest!! The November Shaker Box layout contest is sponsored by Altered Pages and the winner will receive a $20.00 gift certificate from Altered Pages!!

Thankfulness Album!
Soon it will be Thanksgiving; the time of year when our thoughts turn to pilgrims, pumpkin pie, and roasted turkey. It is also a time of tradition and thankfulness. What better time to start a thankfulness theme album! It is an excellent way to relay to future generations the blessings that have been bestowed upon your family. Let's look at several different types of albums that you could consider when planning your thankfulness theme album.
Interview Album
The interview album is based on the opinions and thoughts of others. You will need to ask each person that you are including in your album, what they are especially thankful for this year. There are actually two ways you could handle this:
Interview each person yourself and complete the album based on the answers to the interview questions. If you like to have complete control over the look and feel of your album this may be the way to go. You have editing rights (out of respect you may want to tell the person that you probably won't put everything they say in your album) and you can journal in whatever manner you feel is appropriate. If you prefer computer journaling, this may be the method for you.
Take pictures prior to Thanksgiving Day and create your layout with a blank journal box beside each picture. Place your album in a special place and ask each person to take a few minutes, during the day, to jot down a few things that they are thankful for in your album. This is a wonderful way to preserve a sample of each person's own handwriting.
Sample Interview Questions
You may get lucky and everyone you interview will be able to tell you without hesitation all that they have been thankful for over the past year. However, if you have the same experience I did, you will get the response, “I don't know what to say”, or “I can't remember anything”. It is a good idea to have a few questions ready to prompt your interviewee…just in case! Here are a few such questions.
What is the most special thing that happened to you this year?
What is the best day that you can remember during the past year?
What was your favorite holiday and why?
Did you take a vacation that was particularly memorable?
Is there someone who was a special influence in your life?
What world events may have effected you personally?
Who do you look up to and why is that person special?
Do you feel you've been blessed this year? In what way?
You may choose to complete this album for only one year or make it an annual tradition. Either way, I recommend that you share the album with your family and friends at some point during the day on Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a day that has been set aside to reflect on how each of us have been blessed over the course of the year. What better way than to share this book of blessings with your loved ones.
Annual Book of Thanks
This album is meant to be an ongoing annual album, containing layouts that outline the things that you have been especially thankful for each year. To complete this album, choose several events or blessings that have occurred throughout the year. Create a layout for each using your favorite technique or techniques. For consistency in my album, I use the same technique for each layout covering a particular time period. However, I like to change this with each year I complete, usually using a technique that was popular during the year. I chose to combine the Shabby Chic and Collage techniques for my 2003 layouts. You can find a sample of my album in the Theme Gallery. I always include a section page for each year. This will help to organize your album, and will enhance the visual appeal, as well.

I Have Been Blessed Title Page
Supplies:
Cardstock - Deja Views by C-Thru DMD:
Vellum - Liz King

Watch Faces - Accentology
Word Plaque - Making Memories
Special Directions I wanted to use a simple style for the title page of this album, so it would blend well with the different techniques that I would be using each year. The Making Memories plaque reads, “Love is not a matter of counting the years, it's a matter of making the years count – Theophrastus” |
Special Blessing Album
Focus on a specific area of your life and create an album based on the special way you have been blessed. You will want to include a title page and several layouts that express why you are thankful for this special blessing. The great thing about this album is that it's quick and easy, and can be completed in virtually any size. It is a perfect gift album, especially for hard-to-buy for grandparents and teachers; don't forget that Christmas is right around the corner!
