We are starting a new feature here at The Shaker Box for our members! It is called One Look Three Ways. The idea is that you send our designers some pictures (preferably copies) and they will design a layout for you using your pictures. You will send three sets of the same pictures and each set will be given to three of the designers. Each one will create a layout and send it to you. You will know ahead of time which designers will be participating so that you can choose when to participate based on the styles of the designer.

If you wish to participate, please let us know by August 20, 2004 . So that we may add your name to the “hat” and allow us time to receive the member's pictures that were chosen. This will also give us time to create the layouts before they are featured in the September newsletter.

To have your name added to the “hat”, please send the following information to onelook@theshakerbox.com .

H o m e  S w e e t  H o m e!

Is your house a home? I think sometimes we get caught up in our daily lives and forget about the important things like making our house a “home”. Whether it is extracurricular activities for the kids, cleaning house, or scrapping, we need to try not to allow daily or outside issues to keep us from enjoying our family in our homes.

I remember when my oldest son was playing football. I would rush home from work, grab a quick sandwich for him to eat in the car on the way to the field just to get him to practice in time. This was usually 3 nights per week and then games on Saturday. Now, there is no way he could continue playing football and have dinner at home every night. So, what we did is make the extra effort on the nights that we were home to have a nice family dinner at the dinner table. Dinnertime can be an easy way to help make your house a home. Simply by turning off the television and sitting down as a family without distractions, you can get to know each other and feel that close family bond. This will be difficult at first, because you may not be used to sitting together without distractions or something to look at besides each other. So, there will be that awkward silence and simply staring at your plates or each other for a bit. But, after a while you will get used to it and it will become much easier. One thing you can do to help get conversation flowing is to talk about your day. We would go around the table and each say what was the best thing that happened to us today and what was the worst thing that happened to us today. Sometimes, the events can spring even further conversation. You will be amazed at what your kids have to say when you take the time to listen.

Since I work full time, the only time I have to clean my house is on the weekends. This means that I am losing some quality family home time. I used to spend half of my Saturday or Sunday cleaning the house. Now, I try to do a little bit of cleaning a couple of nights during the week after the kids go to bed and leave as little as possible for the weekends. The best saying I ever saw regarding a clean house was embroidered on a pillow. “My Home is Clean Enough to be Healthy and Dirty Enough to be Happy”. I try to remember this whenever I feel myself start to get overwhelmed and spending more time cleaning than I spend with my family.

The next biggest obstacle in my family time is scrapbooking. I love to scrapbook and I try to do it any chance I get. But, I have to remember that the reason I scrapbook is to preserve our family memories. So, I have to try not to spend so much time scrapping that I don't have time to make any new memories. I try to scrap only after the kids go to bed at night and on the weekends when they are busy doing their own thing and won't miss me.

The most important thing in making your house a home is Time. Find ways to spend that extra few moments with your family and your house will feel like a home every time you are in it and it will be missed those times you are away. I love my Home Sweet Home!
