Matchbook Embellishments

Did you ever think someday you would be adding a matchbook, of all things, to one of your layouts? Matchbooks are becoming the newest rave in the scrapbooking world! There are so many fun and neat uses for matchbooks. One popular use is for adding hidden journaling to your layout. Another great use is for adding a quote to your page or a hidden message.

For this matchbook, I used a smaller style of 2- 1/2 by 2- 1/4. I used Basic Grey Sublime cardstock. First, I inserted the staple like regular matchbooks have and then added the “From the Heart” tag and topped it off with some ribbon.

f

Matchbooks can be made in a variety of sizes. Another type is a matchbook card as shown below. These are a fun and unique way to send a card.

f

To embellish this matchbook, I used Bazzill cardstock and assorted patterned paper. I added some rickrack, then chose a flower die from Sizzix and added the button. This time I chose to add a bunny brad instead of the regular staple and used Doddlebug rub-ons for the word “Easter.”

If you would like to make your very own match book card, simply cut a piece of cardstock 3-3/4 X 7-3/4 and then fold it to make a matchbook as shown in the diagram below.

f

There are so many ways you can decorate these cute little embellishments. Soon you will find yourself using them on everything - from layouts to cards to making the tiniest albums from these adorable matchbooks! Most importantly have fun and don't forget to upload your creations to the Shaker Box gallery today!!

Lately I find myself walking down the craft aisle of stores as much as the scrapping sections looking for something different to add to this hobby of mine. A while back, I ran across Fun Foam, which comes in many colors and various thicknesses. With Fun Foam you can use your punches or any of the die cut units/machines on the market today to make many different items for your scrap layouts or cards.

f

Here is a layout where I used the foam to stamp the words “this” and “big” which gave me something different to use for my title.

The Technique:

fTo start, you might want to gather your supplies needed:

  • Fun Foam (Size 2mm)
  • Rubber stamps
  • Heat gun
  • Scissors or exacto knife
  • Chalks or rub-ons.

1) I usually cut out a piece of foam at least one inch on all sides larger than my stamp or if I'm stamping letters just cut out a strip as long you feel you will need.

2) Heat the foam with a heat gun being careful not to scorch it. I usually wait until the ends start to curl up just a little. This should be less than a minute.

f

3) As soon as the foam is heated press your rubber stamp down firmly and hold for about a minute. You do not have to use any stamping ink on your stamp. Once you release you will see your stamp indented into the foam.

4) At this point you may color in with chalks and or rub-ons. I've used metallic rub-ons a lot when doing this type of stamping.

Examples:

Here is an Easter card using white Fun Foam and a Lily stamp from Sunday International. Using cotton swabs, I gently colored in the flower with metallic rub-ons and then adhered the foam to cardstock with a couple of brads. I like to see and feel the different texture you get from using the foam versus simply stamping. It's nice for a change of pace.

However you apply this technique, you can't go wrong as it adds just the right extra dimension and pop to any project. Have fun with the foam and don't forget to upload your next masterpiece in the Shaker Box Gallery. We would love to see your work!!

Items from the Grocery Store

Over the last couple of years, since I began scrapping, my trips to the grocery store are no longer the same. Now, instead of paper lunch sacks, cupcake holders, and labels, I see mini scrapbooks, printed paper, and embellishments.

Scrapping with “zany,” non-traditional items can be fun. I am still learning, myself, to look at things around me differently. In doing so, I have uncovered countless things that I can put on my pages, cards, and altered art that, not too long ago, I would have walked right past.

If you want to use a label or cupcake holder, for example, you can incorporate them in a few different ways. No need to worry about whether or not the item is archival quality. With the current archival mists on the market, such as Krylon's Make It Acid-Free, you can make almost anything safe for your scrapbooks. You also could scan and print the item on archival paper, which is what I did in this layout titled, "Who Needs Milk???"

In this case, I used a Nesquik label. You could also consider using non-acid free products in your albums. As long as they do not come in contact with your photos, they should be fine. If you want to create something like a paper bag book, you can use scanned copies of your photos, rather than the original. There are several ways to have the unique touches you want without worrying about the photos and memories we are working so hard to preserve.

So, make your next trip to the grocery a scrapping adventure. Remain open to all the possibilities that lay on the shelves… and at a very affordable price.

So many of us take a simple breath for granted and there are those who struggle with shortness of breath, persistent coughing and other varied symptoms of Cystic Fibrosis. Our very own Brenda, Mammascrapper, cares for her son having these symptoms on a daily basis. It is the cause of a genetic disease affecting more than 30,000 children and adults here in the United States. Brenda says she used to worry day to day about how this horrible disease was going to take her son away. Now she is taking this energy and turning it into something positive to make sure he lives a long and healthy life! He and others have a chance with her energies behind them! So……

It’s time for some Spring cleaning, Shaker Box Members! Do you have items that you don’t think you will use or just isn’t your style any more? The time has come to do a clean sweep of your scrapbooking supplies and turn what you might consider trash into treasure!

Take a long look at your supplies. What is it that you could part with? Fiber? Some ribbon? What about that stash of diecuts or stickers? Put them together in a grouping you know would make it look good for someone else to want to purchase or win as a prize at a crop! Now, take a look at your supplies again and reflect on your hidden scrappy talents! Can you make something with any of the items you have? A set of tags, some cards with envelopes, a page kit, toppers, selection of quotes on transparencies in various fonts… the ideas are endless!

Here is Brenda’s plea for your assistance in our Chit Chat forum:

Okay ladies, I don't know what I've gotten myself into again this year but last year I did a dinner/concert benefit in honor of my son to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and we raised almost $9000. This year I am doing a CROP! It’s in September, but I need help. The building that has been donated will fit at least 300 people so I'm going BIG! But I need stuff. AnneMarie had a great idea of maybe doing a Spring cleaning type thing - clean out those supplies we don't or haven’t used. I just need stuff for goodie bags, prizes, raffle items. GOOD STUFF!

What would help me out even more is if any of you ladies had good contacts with any Manufacturers, or websites that can donate product. I have already received stuff from various companies.

This is a great motivator to get your scrappy supplies in order! Give your goods to another scrapper who will put her money where her crop is, by joining Brenda’s CF Charity Crop! Consider this a challenge from the Shaker Box to you!!! Find it in your heart to help Brenda make this a success in finding a solution to Cystic Fibrosis.

Thanks so much for any and all help toward such a charity! When you have your goods together contact Brenda (Mammascrapper) for her address where she will be collecting all of the goods. There will be updates on the Shaker Box through the Spring and Summer as to what is being collected! The Shaker Box chairpersons for this event will be AnneMarie and Brenda and if you have any questions at all, please contact them. Let’s make this a great success and have a Hoodie Hoo good time in the process!
