Embellished CANister

Materials:

  • Patterned Paper - four different scraps
  • Metallic Paperclips, or colors of your choice
  • Colorbok Sticky Stitches in a primary solid
  • Mini-Glue Dots
  • Cording
  • White Acrylic Paint

Use an empty square coffee can. I used one from General Mills International coffee but you can use a similar type can.

1) Paint the lid with acrylic paint. Add fiber or ribbon around edge of lid.

2) Cut patterned paper to fit the top and glue it on. Add fiber around inside edge of the top. Use mini-glue dots to hold the paperclips on.

3) Cut three different pieces of patterned paper and glue around outside of can. Use mini-Glue Dots to hold metallic paperclips around sides of can. You can also use hot glue, if you desire. Fill with paper clips or embellishments from around your scrapbooking area for a great alternative to expensive organizers.

Fun with Hardware Finds

Who would have thought we could actually find scrap supplies at the hardware store? Drywall Tape is an inexpensive way to get mesh in a lot of colors without paying a lot of money. Sold in large rolls, drywall tape has one side that already has adhesive on it. The best part is that it is acid-free!

Generally, drywall tape rolls come in white, however changing the color of it is very easy. You can use, paint, chalks, markers, inkpads, or heat embossing, Using UTEE gives the mesh a weathered look especially when using gold or platinum colors. You can do this simply by sprinkling the powder on the sticky side of the tape and heat the powders with a heat gun. The results are stunning as you can see in this example:

Coloring the drywall tape yourself is great for getting that perfect matching color for your layout! This is a great find at the hardware store! Who knows what else you might find there?

Contest Reminders!

Who doesn’t love to win a contest and at the Shaker Box, we love to see our members win big!! Each month, The Shaker Box offers many different contests and one is sure to appeal to you! If you’ve never entered before, March is time to begin. You cannot win if you do not enter!

March Theme and Technique Layout Contest!

Trinket, Trash and Treasure, home of the most wonderful monthly paper arts kits, is the sponsor for the March layout contest! These monthly kits are packed full of unique products to inspire all of your artistic talents!

Everything has gone a little “Mad” this month at The Shaker Box as we explore the theme of March Madness. The March Theme and Technique contest will highlight layouts exhibiting scrapbooking techniques gone wild!

You should upload to the T&T contest gallery your original layouts that illustrate the theme - your ability to go “mad” with techniques. In addition, for March, the technique is showing the Zany quality of some our scrapping techniques – such as hardware and grocery store finds. So, in addition to the theme, you must also incorporate THREE items found from any of the six places listed below:

Something found at a hardware store
Something found in your junk drawer
Something found at a grocery store (not food)
Something found in a kids' craft isle
Something found in nature
Something found in an office/supply store

To enter, simply create a layout (limit 2 per member) using BOTH the theme and the technique and upload it to the Shaker gallery by 12:00 CST, March 31st. Good Luck!

March Photography Contest
In like a lamb… out like a lion…

Regardless of where you live, March signals a time of great change. The photos you take the first of the month, will generally differ greatly from those you take at the end of the month. Whether you live in the Northern Hemisphere and you a’re changing from winter to spring – or you are in the southern part of the world, mate, and preparing for the cold – change is inevitable.

For the MARCH Photography Contest – TWO photos will be required: One from this first portion of March and one from the latter. Find a focal point in your scenery, in your yard, in your children or even yourself and take a photograph NOW. Look for the basic design elements – the rule of thirds, color, framing, etc. Then, take a shot as similar in design in the latter part of March and compare and contrast the two. Be creative in your thinking and in your shots!

Tiny Details: You may enter TWICE – up to FOUR photos. They can be digital or not, black and white or color. Deadline is 12:00 CST, March 31, 2005. Upload your photographs into the Photography Challenge Contest gallery. A panel of judges will decide the winner, therefore, Shaker Box Team Members, excluding Michele and Mac, may enter the contest. A prize will be awarded to one First Place winner.

GOOD LUCK!!

Photo Contest Winner

The theme for Februarys' photo contest at The Shaker Box was "Your Greatest Passion." Members were encouraged to take photographs of representations of the things, people or places in their lives about which or whom they were passionate. The winner for February was Kim, KLC216, for her photo "Grandma's Hockey Passion 2."

The judges loved the expression on Grandma's face - a priceless expression, indeed! When describing her winning photo, Kim says, " This is when Grandma heard there would be no hockey this season due to the lockout! She's now one unhappy, yet still passionate, hockey fan, just waiting for next season!"

She will be receiving a prize package from our wonderful sponsors valued at $10. The March Photography Challenge Contest, "In Like a Lamb, Out Like a Lion…," has been posted and you will not want to miss out on this and other upcoming ideas, tips and inspiration in the newly revamped photography forum. February Theme/Technique Layout Contest

The Theme and Technique contest for February at The Shaker Box required the entrants to incorporate the theme of "Greatest LoMolly's Houseves" and for them to use the technique of stamping. With her layout, "Molly's House," the winner for February is Molly S, viastelle.

For the technique portion of the contest, Molly used Making Memories foam stamps, but rather than using paint, she stamped her words with clear embossing ink and used Ranger Seafoam White embossing powder to give her words an ethereal quality, replicating the shadows in the photos on the layout.

Molly says of the layout itself, "I love this house and everything about it… This house has been my friend since I moved to Conway. It's been a place of comfort and quiet when I needed to get away and the subject of my art. I repay the favor by keeping it safe from those who don't perceive its wealth. But, nothing lasts forever, except in my photographs."

It would appear Molly truly has a great love for "her house." Thank you, Molly for participating and congratulations. She will be receiving a stamp set from our sponsor Leave Memories.

Each month The Shaker Box features a different Theme and Technique (TNT) Layout Contest hosted by one of our fabulous site sponsors. Participants have an opportunity to win wonderful prizes from various scrapbook companies. If you would like to share your creative talents with us by participating in this contest, please upload your layouts into the Shaker Box monthly layout contest folder by the last day of the month.
