Challenges

Challenges for Every Day of the Week!!!

It has been an entire month since The Shaker Box opened its new Challenge Forum and what a success it has been. The forum has drawn many new members to TSB, but more importantly, it has been a source of inspiration for some incredibly beautiful layouts, cards and altered art projects.

Each of us working behind the scenes thank those of you faithfully participate in these challenges and look forward to many more months and years of fun and excitement in the Challenge forum. It will grow, change and continue to develop over the coming months as we continue to meet the needs of you, our members!

For all of you who have faithfully joined us in doing the daily and monthly challenges, your names were placed into “a hat” and two names have been selected. The Challenge winner for January, as well as the Page total winner for December, which was never announced, are Carolyn “cfodel” and Betty “sage.” Congratulations to you both!

Remember, the more challenges you do, the more times your name will be put into the drawing and there is still plenty of time to complete challenges for February.

Join us for the:

  • MONDAY: Mountains of Stash - find out what item Michele will be eliminating from your mountain of supplies that you've been hoarding, as she issues a challenge each Monday.

  • TUESDAY: Two fer Tuesdays - you get two challenges for the price of one as Jen brings you card challenges each week and Mac offers you color challenges bi-weekly to help you rotate around the wheel!

  • WEDNESDAY: Words of Wisdom will bring wisdom to your pages and inspiration through Words as Carla challenges you to use just one WORD, one special word, as a focus on your layout. Lynn and Mac will also inspire you with words of wit and wisdom through her quote challenges.

  • THURSDAY: Theme Books are the focus for Thursdays as Mac encourages you to create books with a purpose, those with a theme; whether it be a mini-album, tag booklet, My Life's Journey's album or a simple quote book - whatever the theme, you will find inspiration through Mac's challenges each week.

  • FRIDAY: TGIF but you aren't out of challenges - the weekend is just beginning! Each week our design team members will rotate to issue random challenges that will keep your pages going and your ideas flowing through the weekend!

  • SATURDAY: ADS and ART, whichever suits your inspiration, Saturday will be the day you will find your muse as Lynn shares new sources of mediums for your motivation.

  • SUNDAY: Sketches, just as a builder needs a blueprint for a good foundation, sometimes every artist needs a good sketch for a piece of art. Let Michele or Jenn's sketches be a source of a good foundation for your next layout!

While these are a few of the NEW challenges, our old friends and standbys haven't been tossed away! You will still find many of your favorite challenges, such as the Page and Card Challenges, listed in the forum as well!

However you derive your inspiration, there are CHALLENGES galore just waiting for you inside our Shakin' Challenge Forums!

FISKARS TEXTURE PLATE & EMBOSSING TOOL REVIEW

Manufacturer: Fiskars
MSRP: $4.99-$14.99 (set up to 6)
Rating: 10

Review:
If you want to add dimension and texture to your next layout or project, then Fiskars has the right tool for you! Their plates will add that extra element of texture so many of us are looking for, without a lot of the time involved with the dry embossing technique.

The plates are extremely easy to work with as they can be used by themselves or by pegging or by pegging them to the Fiskars Embossing system for added stability. Each plate measuring 7 ½ x 5 ¾ inches, has 2 textures – one on each side and is typically sold in packs of 4 or by the new assortment pack of 12!! You can find textures such as hearts, stones, lines, waves, dots, stars, leaves, wood grain, brick, bubbles, squares and fabric. With so many diverse textures, how can you go wrong!

Instructions for Use
Using the textures plates is very user-friendly. Start by securing the plate of choice on your embossing system or by placing it on a self-healing mat which will help to “hold” the plate in place. Next, position the paper or top of the plate, patterned side down if applicable. Then simply us the specially designed Fiskars texturing tool, with its unique beaded swivel base, to imprint the texture onto the cardstock.

For best results, remember to use the tool in a circular motion and cover the page completely to get the full affect of the pattern when embossing a full sheet of paper. If the tool seems to catch the paper at any point, a good tip is to place a sheet of wax paper in between the paper and tool to help it glide and reduce friction.

Creative Uses
Other uses for the plates are to emboss various types of foils, metal sheets, etc. You can also emboss tags, photo mats or borders. For something fun and creative, I also spread some of the paper magic over a plate and let it dry. When it was done, I peeled the paper magic to reveal the wonderful texture underneath!

So, if you haven't tried the latest texture plates and embossing tool from Fiskars, what are you waiting for? Visit www.fiskars.com for more tips, techniques and project ideas.
