What in the world is CHA? Oh, it's only the biggest, best crafting event of the year! From February 12-15, 2005, Atlanta, GA will host the world's largest craft and hobby trade event. The CHA website boasts of the 1.1 million square feet of convention space that will house 20,000 industry professionals from around the world. There will be 3000 booths of vendors and at last count, 135 of them in the scrapbooking and paper crafting section. That's a 9% increase from shows in year's past.
CHA stands for Craft and Hobby Association. It is the newly combined association of both HIA (Hobby Industry Association) and ACCI (Association of Crafts & Creative Industries). Product categories include General Crafts, Art Materials & Framing, Fabric/ Quilting/ Needlecraft, Florals/ Seasonal/ Home & Garden and of course Scrapbooking & Paper Crafting.

I've chosen to highlight only a couple of the companies represented at the show. You can take a look yourself at everything it has to offer at http://www.chashow.org. Within the CHA website you'll find a schedule of events and a map of the convention floor (with web addresses visible as you scroll over the booths.) Many of the companies at the show have websites, but don't expect to see the latest and greatest yet. There are a number of vendors who won't unveil their new lines until February!

Metropolis Paper: The first company I want to highlight is Metropolis Paper. Wow, I've found a new line of papers! Metropolis Paper International has a wonderful line of papers as seen above! I'm absolutely in love with the Euro line. It's simply spectacular and so dimensional! There are many other wonderful lines to choose from as well!
Bosskut: Next is BossKut! Here's a new personal die-cut system that is priced just RIGHT! In addition to the standard sized machine, there will also be a Boss Kut Jr. - perfect for taking along to crops and traveling! Watch out, it's hitting the stores soon! Check out the site link and view the available fonts today. Don't forget to bookmark so you can go back in the next couple of weeks when it's ready for sale!
Laser Lines: If you like laser letters you will want to check out Laser Lines. These products are beautiful and numerous. One of their most unique products are the Overlay Sets. These are 12x12 pages which have laser cut words and designs cut directly into them. You lay them OVER another color! The laser tags, titles, vellum and foam words are sure to help you create classy cards or pages in minutes.
Sassafrass Lass : This next company has been around for a while, and their current line is awesome, funky and fresh! From Pretty in Pink to Lavendar Love, from Kiwi to Jingle Bell Rock, this company is really pulling out all the stops! Check out Sassafrass Lass today. You'll be sure to create wonderful pages in a snap! I know I can't wait to see what they come out with this year!
Graeham Owens Handmade Paper: Lastly, I've selected a company that is new to me. Graeham Owens Handmade Paper Merchants have a beautiful line of papers. Check their link: Wow!! These handmade papers are created from Lokta papersr. In addition to paper, they also have stationery, giftsets, photo albums, and frames. They are simply beautiful online. I can only imagine what they look like in person! You may know someone attending the CHA conference or perhaps it's you who will be there in person. Check out some of the companies that will be there and be on the lookout for some terrific new products to start hitting the stores in the very near future!

Featuring Shaker Member :
CHRIS GREISER !

I'm pleased to introduce, Chris Greiser, our January member in the spotlight. Chris started scrapbooking about three years ago around the time her daughter was born. Like many, Chris started scrapping after being invited to a Creative Memories class, but she says her “real push into the obsession” was when her husband gave her a membership to a monthly kit club.
Scrapping came naturally to Chris. In high school she was a co-editor for the school yearbook. This was just a natural extension of what she was already accustomed to doing. It was the perfect creative outlet for her.
She met her husband, Mel in Cincinnati, OH, playing Ultimate. Today they reside in Portland, OR with their daughter, three-year-old Caitlyn and their Rottweiler, Samson. Together, they are the subjects on most of Chris' page layouts. She works in the engineering field, with her current group designing parts for color printers.
Chris describes her style as “simple and clean.” She loves the lumpy stuff but doesn't always remember to use it. Her pages tend to focus on the photos and the stories related to them. Hidden journaling allows her more space to write. Hidden journaling is among her favorite techniques as is paper tearing, and distressing - especially with ink. Recently she added acrylic painting to this list as well. Many of her pages are kinetic and “incorporate some sort of element that moves – flip-up photos, slide-out journaling boxes, rotating tags and floppy fibers.”
Chris is most proud of the numerous gift albums she's created. She jests, “Perhaps I've done more scrapping for others than I've actually done for myself”. What a wonderful way to share yourself and your family with others!
“Making a dent” in her pile of photos tops her list of goals for the coming year. Other items on the list include learning to use her digital SLR and possibly joining a design team or trying to get published. She's often participating in Shaker challenges and I'm sure she'll reach more than one of these goals!
When she's not scrapping, she enjoys Ultimate, camping, sea kayaking, anything else outdoors and “running around barefoot (preferably in the sun).”
Chris loves participating at The Shaker Box and loves so much about the site -- especially the challenges and inspiration. She says, “The boards are so nice and positive and fun-loving! The community is small enough that I don't feel like I'm lost in the fray.”
We're so glad that Chris feels so “at home” here and we thank her for her participation now and in the future. Please visit Chris' gallery today and allow her to inspire you!
