Journaling:
Abby wanted no part of getting her ears pierced for the longest time. A few months ago when I asked her she inquired if it hurts. I didn’t want to lie so I told her “a little” and went on to explain how they use a little plastic gun to “shoot” the earings in. She decided she didn’t need earrings yet. Every so often I would ask (can you tell mom wanted them pierced?) and she would decline. Then last Tuesday I was talking with Stephanie and Joanne about it while Abby was playing
nearby with Allah. I suddenly realized that Abby might think it was a real gun! So, I decided that I’d take her to check it out. Stephanie jokingly (ok, half jokingly) said that if she got them pierced and was brave that she should be able to go to the Disney Store and pick out whatever she wanted. The girls were far enough away that they didn’t hear---or so we thought! A little while later we were walking home and I mentioned ear piercing to Abby. To my surprise, she said she wanted to do it and quickly followed it up by
saying that if she was a good girl she’d get to go to the Disney Store afterward and pick out whatever she
wanted---Thanks, Stephanie. For the remainder of the week, I asked her each day if she still wanted to do it. Each day she assured me that she did and didn’t hesitate to remind me about the follow-up visit to her favorite store. Saturday came and I went and checked out the ear piercing places at the mall to ensure I could find one that would do both ears at once. Later that afternoon we went to the mall with
Stephanie and Shannan for the big event. Abby was a very big girl and picked out her earings and told the girl what she wanted. She sat in the chair brave as can be and waited for it to be over. I fully expected an all out tantrum and was proud and amazed to watch my brave little girl work through it all on her own. There were tears in her eyes when it was done and she SO wanted to cry, but she didn’t. She just sat quietly until I offered to pick her up, then snuggled in for comfort. Within minutes she was asking about the Disney Store. Of course we went. She is now the proud owner of what she calls her BLING BLING and an Ariel Polly Pockets set. Nov. 2006
